Nyoirin Kannon

Japan

Not on view

The bodhisattva Kannon is represented here with Esoteric Buddhist attributes: his wish-fulfilling jewel and the wheel of Buddhist teachings. Carved into the base are female donors’ names; this votive offering to a temple may have been connected with the monthly jūkuya-kō ritual for the safe delivery of healthy children.
