Many of the finest pieces in the Kakiemon style used underglaze cobalt blue with or without overglaze enamels. This piece can be recognized as Kakiemon style by the high quality of the porcelain body and the purity of cobalt blue used, as well as by the characteristic iron-oxide rim and the bird and flower design. Other Kakiemon style motifs include Chinese figures in a landscape and certain set themes like tigers and bamboo. The designs used are loosely based on Chinese motifs popular at the time.
