Qanbūs

possibly Saudi or Syrian

Not on view

Found throughout the Arabian Peninsula, this plucked short-necked lute is carved from a single wood block and its hollowed body is covered with lamb skin. Linguistic variants of its names are widely distributed from North African to Indonesia. In Sumatra the related term gambus is used to describe an instrument similar to the ūd.
