Lele people

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

This large two-manual, box-resonated instrument has a deeper, louder sound than smaller examples. Metal rings on the lamellae produce a pleasant buzzing sound. The marimbula of Latin America is an adaptation of this larger African version.
