Sake Cup (Guinomi)
Karatsu ware, including everyday ceramics, emerged in the sixteenth century. Examples made before the mid-seventeenth century are known as “Old Karatsu”—like this cup, which was valued for the pleasure of its use. It has a gently carved foot and subtly flared rim that has been repaired with silver lacquer. The silver repair harmonizes beautifully with the warm brown tones in a “perfectly imperfect” (wabi-sabi) aesthetic that appealed to tea masters of the time.
