Set of Ten Bowls (Hachi) with Egrets

1639
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 230
This set of blue-and-white dishes corresponds to sherds unearthed at the early Arita kiln site of Kamanotsuji, dated between 1630 and 1650. The accompanying wooden storage box bears an inscription with a date indicating 1639, making it the earliest known dated box for Arita porcelain. Harry Packard must have recognized the exceptional significance of this remarkably well-preserved and complete set.
