Small Jar (Kotsubo) with Relief Plum- Blossom Patterns

ca. 1630–40s
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 225
During the latter half of the seventeenth century, Arita kilns expanded their production beyond celadon plates and bowls to include small dishes, incense burners, lidded containers, vases, and jars—refined items for the wealthy. This well-balanced jar is an early example. The surface features appliqué plum blossoms covered in red pigment.
