The Evening Wind-bell

Kitao Masanobu (Santō Kyōden) Japanese

Not on view

Changing the lofty temple bell to a tiny wind chime, the poem printed in the cloud cartouche keeps the light mood of Masanobu's print, one of a series of "Eight Parlor Views," a fashionable pastiche of the traditional "Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers" theme:

uzushisa wo
nokiha ni tsuzuru
fuurin wa
tamoto ni kaze wo
irimetsu no kane

Ringing in the cool beneath the eaves
the bell of the wind chime
has the wind in its sleeves.
