Nishikawa Sukenobu was one of Kyoto's most productive ukiyo-e artists. He first studied under the painter Kano Einô (1631–1697), then under Tosa Mitsusuke (1675–1710), and finally turned to ukiyo-e. Here, the cherry tree, rock, and shorelines with strong brushwork are typical of the Kano school.
