Plate

ca. 1830–ca. 1870
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This pink and white transfer-printed cup plate made by an unidentified Staffordshire firm features an unascribed romantic view of a crenelated castle and church on opposite banks of a river with mountains in the distance. It depicts European, rather than American, scenery and was likely produced for the European market. The source of the view is unknown. Refer to the Dictionary for a definition of the term "transfer printing."
