Plate

1842–45
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
The crown with three plumes pressed into the center of this plate refers to the Prince of Wales, lending support to the thesis that the plate commemorates the birth in 1842 of Victoria and Albert's first son. The border decoration includes the thistle symbolizing Scotland, the shamrock for Ireland, and the rose for England and is very similar to the border of another plate in the collection, 51.171.162. While this plate is most likely of English origin, it is possible that such plates may have been manufactured in America as well.
