Plate
This black and white and flow-blue transfer-printed earthenware plate made by the Staffordshire firm of Mellor, Venables & Co. features the coat-of-arms of the State of Virginia. It belongs to a series produced for the United States export market displaying the arms of Delaware, Maryland, Massachussetts, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Virginia in various combinations. Plates in the series like this example are fourteen-sided with panelled rims. Some have borders with miniature coats-of-arms, while others like this plate have only a thin flow blue circle around the edge.
