Katabira

first half of the 17th century
Not on view
This katabira bears the crest of three wild ginger (aoi) leaves in a ring. The crest (mon) was used by both the main and branch families of the Tokugawa, who ruled Japan during the Edo period. An inscription that accompanied this robe indicates that the piece once belonged to the second Tokugawa shogun, Hidetada (r. 1605–23), but the claim has not been verified. Nonetheless, the robe is most likely from the first half of the seventeenth century, judging from its similarity to other extant katabira of the period.
