Limestone relief head of a Persian

Greek, Tarentine

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 162

This finely carved relief head depicts a Persian, identified by the distinctive head scarf tied around the neck and pulled over his chin. The relief, once part of a pediment or metope adorning a Tarentine funerary naiskos, probably depicted a battle or hunt.
