Uttara Rama Charitra, The Assembly of Rama

India

Not on view

This print depicts the concluding scene of the Ramayana epic, in which Vishnu in his Rama avatar restores order to the world of men, ensuring an era of benign governance. Here, Rama is enthroned at the court of his capital city of Ayodhya, accompanied by his family and attended by his court priest Vashista and worshipped by a kneeling Hanuman, his devout monkey-general. This composition was borrowed from an earlier anonymous print created for the Chitrapriyaprakesh Press in Mumbai published in 1886.
