Wilton album, folio 19i: The Holy Family; the Virgin and Child on the right, Saint Joseph in the lower left corner
On folio 19 with ten other prints: 27.78.1(88-95 and 97-98). Inscribed in pen and ink along the lower margin of the album folio: 'Inigo Jones so fond of Parmegiano, that he bought the Prints of the Imperfect Plates, which are no [sic] here in this Book'
For more information on the Wilton album see entry for 27.78.1(1-428)
Richardson connects this print to a lost drawing by Parmigianino, related to the composition of Parmigianino's painting of the Virgin and Child with Saint Zacharias, now in the Uffizi, Florence. While the figure of Joseph in the lower left corner is closely related to the male saint in the painting, the Virgin and Child group differ substantially from the painted model. Two further prints reproduce the same design in opposite orientation: an engraving by Georges Reverdy [Gaspare Reverdino] (Bartsch XV.470.8; 27.78.2(312)), and a skillfully executed etching by an unknown printmaker (27.78.2(311)), both with different backgrounds. The two later prints may be loose copies of Schiavone's etching or may be related to the lost drawing posited by Richardson. A very worn impression of a later state; for an impression of the first state see The Metropolitan Museum Mariette Album (folio 10)
