Cord Painting 15

Regina Bogat matured as an artist in New York City in the 1960s, where she travelled in circles that included Abstract Expressionists, Minimalists, and Post-Minimalists. A hybrid object, Cord Painting 15 is a tall rectangular canvas onto whose rust-colored surface the artist has painted in beige four equally-sized and equally-spaced arrow-shaped forms. Through the top of these forms Bogat threaded pieces of nylon rope in a range of hues—mostly muted browns and pinks with the occasional black and white—tying them in the back and securing the knots with tape. The cords are arranged by color and separated by regular intervals. When seen from the back, the knots form a row of grids. This order quickly descends into chaos, however, when the cords fall towards the floor, creating a tangled, multi-chromatic mess that disrupts the stability and purity of the grid format.
