Ornamental designs with scrolling acanthus leaves, after Papillon and Bernard Picard
Page of book containing 185 leaves with a collection of lithographs, aquatints, engravings, and other media, with ornamental designs published by Fleury Chavant in Paris, part of the publication "Guide du Dessinateur de l'industrie: une macédoine de dessins variés , tels que fleurs, ornemens, etc. ... Ouvrage destiné aux fabricants et dessinateurs de soieries... et Papiers Peints..." This plate contains three ornamental designs after creations of Papillon and Bernard Picart. The first consists of a palmette standing on scrolling acanthus leaves on a base bade up of C-curves, flanked below by a stylized fleur de lis, from which emerge two scrolling acanthus leaves that connect to two horizontal palmettes that stand to the sides of this central motif and connect to larger scrolling acanthus leaves, some with thin scrolling branch offsets, and holding two small vases with flames, which stand on the sides of the design. The second design is made up of an angel, sitting on a sphere and holding two trumpets, one close to his mouth, inside a frame made up of scrolling motifs interlaced with scrolling acanthus leaves, thin garlands and bundles of stylized leaves, and strips of pearls and small, stylized fleurs de lis. The final design is made up of a rich bundle of acanthus leaves, stylized flowers and cornucopias, outlined over a dark ground made up of thin vertical and horizontal black lines.
