Textile (?) designs with bundles of stylized exotic flowers
Page of book containing 185 leaves with a collection of lithographs, aquatints, engravings, and other media, with ornamental designs published by Fleury Chavant in Paris, part of the publication "Guide du Dessinateur de l'industrie: une macédoine de dessins variés , tels que fleurs, ornemens, etc. ... Ouvrage destiné aux fabricants et dessinateurs de soieries... et Papiers Peints..." This plate contains three textile (?) designs with Indian motifs made up of stylized exotic flowers and leaves. The first desin is made up of undulating branches with stylized exotic leaves, decorated with scrolling motifs, rosettes, stripes and dots, and large, stylized, exotic flowers and rosettes, also decorated with scrolls, rosettes, stripes and dots. The second design is made up of large bundles with stylized exotic flowers, decorated with scrolling motifs and stippes, and smaller, stylized exotic flowers scattered around the design, on a background with scattered dashes and dots. The third design is made up of bundles of stylized flowers and leaves of different kinds, some of them made up with eye shapes, lozenges, and dots, and others ressembling more naturalistic flowers and leaves. The designs in this sheet were likely inspired by Indian calicoes, and the exotic flowers and leaves are likely intended to represent those found in the Orient. The designs are executed with black ink on thin, light brown paper, but were likely intended to be made with lively colors when used for printed textiles or wallpapers.
