Design for a shawl with paisley leaves, palmettes, and thin garlands with exotic flowers
Page of book containing 185 leaves with a collection of lithographs, aquatints, engravings, and other media, with ornamental designs published by Fleury Chavant in Paris, part of the publication "Guide du Dessinateur de l'industrie: une macédoine de dessins variés , tels que fleurs, ornemens, etc. ... Ouvrage destiné aux fabricants et dessinateurs de soieries... et Papiers Peints..." This plate contains a design for a shawl made up of alternating scrolling paisley leaves, filled with thin, undulating garlands with semi-abstract exotic flowers and leaves, and palmettes, made up of a thin, long, teardrop-shaped center flanked with five scrolling leaves, decorated with thin, undulating branches with small, semi-abstract flowers and leaves, and semi-abstract leaves, filled alternatingly with thin, diagonal lines with a small, semi-abstract flower on a stem, and with semi-abstract striped motifs, over a white background with thin, scrolling garlands with semi-abstract exotic flowers and leaves. The design is executed with black ink on thin, light brown paper. The motifs in the design seem to have been inspired on Indian calicoes and were most likely intended for printed textiles or wallpapers, and were possibly manufactured with vivid colors.
