Study of Medieval Armor and a Crossbow (recto); Studies of a Medieval Helmet (verso)
Eugène Delacroix French
Not on view
As an alternative to the classical past, artists of Delacroix’s generation turned to medieval history for subject matter. To convincingly convey the period and populate their scenes, they studied relevant artifacts and costume. In 1825 Delacroix had the opportunity to visit a renowned private collection of arms and armor in London, where he made this drawing based on objects dated between 1420 and 1450, as he noted at the top of the sheet.
