Studies of a Horse and Rider for "Heliodorus Driven from the Temple"
Eugène Delacroix French
Not on view
This sheet contains preliminary sketches of an angel on horseback. The figure dominates the left side of the composition Delacroix designed for the Chapel of the Holy Angels in the Parisian church of Saint-Sulpice. With a cluster of curved ink lines, the artist conjured the horse and the vital energy of its movement. In the upper right of the drawing, Delacroix tested a more forward-leaning posture for the rider. A third version of the ensemble in graphite below anticipates the direction he would take in the painting.
