Brothers Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene are among the leading architects and designers of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. Based in Pasadena, California, the firm primarily designed residences, creating bespoke interiors and finely crafted furnishings for their larger commissions primarily located nearby. Their aesthetic was principally rooted in the tenets of the British Arts and Crafts Movement—upholding ideals of handcraftsmanship and truth in materiality and construction, with a demonstrable affinity for Japanese architecture and design.
With their signature lap joint construction, soft edges, and raised ebony pegs, this mahogany and marble tabouret reflects the firm’s meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. Like their contemporaries, Greene and Greene followed the European concept of "gesamtkunstwerk," where the entire project was conceived as a cohesive work of art, a concept epitomized by this small domestic object.
