The Rookwood Pottery, founded by Maria Longworth Nichols in 1880, became one of the most significant and longest surviving of all of the American art potteries, remaining in operation until well after World War II. Of all the potteries during this period, it was among the largest and most successful, benefitting from a roster of talented artists and designers and a sophisticated marketing approach. Unlike other art potteries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Rookwood navigated the evolving tastes and decorative modes of the period, creatively adapting to the prevailing styles over the decades.
