Leaded-glass panel
Although it is not known how this panel was originally intended to be used, it is likely that it was part of the decorations that Tiffany executed for Emily Johnston and Robert W. de Forest in 1898 when they called upon him to provide decorations in many media for their townhouse on Washington Square. Not only were the de Forests great friends with Tiffany, but they were also connected to the Metropolitan from its earliest history. This leaded-glass panel is actually one of the rare survivals in being a decorative leaded glass panel in a Cosmati design, a design that was highly favored by Tiffany’s studios, yet not for leaded glass, but rather for the more traditional use of the design historically, mosaic work.
