View in an Italianate Courtyard (courtyard with stairs and a round arch)
Thomas Wijck Dutch
Wijck was one of numerous Dutch artists who made their way to Italy and returned with drawings that served as source material for their later work. While some artists depicted Italian people, landscapes, or the monuments of Roman antiquity, Wijck focused squarely on local buildings and more specifically on modest houses and courtyards bathed in bright Southern sunlight. The quick and loose handling of the penwork here suggests that he may have invented the scene on the basis of familiar motifs.
