Sgrafitto plate with Zebra
Waylande Gregory American
Art Deco in character are Waylande Gregory’s interpretations of the zebra in clay. Gregory and other artists of the period found exotic animals like the Zebra of a character ripe for interpretation. No doubt the animal’s striking black and white hide, with its dramatic graphic patterning conformed well to the Art Deco aesthetic. Gregory had earlier made a somewhat whimsical small sculptural figure of a Zebra that he exhibited in 1936.
