Decorated Folio

Not on view

This unfinished page may have been created with a stencil or drawn freehand by a gifted artist; either way, gold ink was then applied to outline undulating floral, saz leaf and arabesque motifs. Pages like this originally framed paintings, drawings or samples of calligraphy, which would have been pasted together and included in an album or manuscript. This part of the page illustrates how folios in Islamic book arts were comprised of layers of paper.
