"Conquering the Qamus Fort," Folio from a Hamla-yi Haidari (Attack of the Lion)

Not on view

This illustrated folio is from a Shi'i epic recounting the life and exploits of 'Ali, the Prophet's son-in-law and, according to Shi'is, the legitimate successor to the Prophet. Both the Prophet, here wearing a white face-veil, and 'Ali are featured. The scene depicts a moment during the conquest of the Qamus fortress. The Prophet is shown reprimanding one of his followers (‘Abdullah) for getting drunk on wine and orders his attendants to punish him. The painting is rendered in a palette of pinks, blues and yellows typical of the Qajar period.
