Worktable

Attributed to Charles-Honoré Lannuier American
1815–19
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
The graceful elegance of the lyre supports crested with swans’ heads elicit the symmetry and sophistication in keeping with the Classical Revival of the early nineteenth century. The craftsman’s skill recall his beginnings in France where furniture makers championed theatrical veneering techniques, like the acajou ronceaux or crotch-grained, bookmatched veneers seen on the front of this worktable. Promised by the Bretter family in honor of the Metropolitan Museum’s 150th Anniversary, this worktable builds on the museum’s extraordinary collection of masterpieces by Lannuier and his contemporaries.
