Shri Shri Radha Krishna

Krishnahari Das

Not on view

In this tender vison of the love of Krishna and Radha, we see the lovers standing together in a glade within a wooded landscape, each poised on a lotus cushion. Krishna plays his flute whilst gazing at Radha, who stands enchanted by the beauty of the moment. They are both heavily bejeweled, and their rich garments glow against the deep shades of the surrounding woods. The love of Radha and Krishna forms one of the most powerful expressions of Hindu devotionalism (bhakti) and is a recurring theme from the later medieval period into the modern age, celebrated in the 12th century devotional poem by Jayadeva, the Gita Govinda, which is set in the forested landscape around the village of Vrindavan, near Mathura, the childhood home of Krishna.
