In a telling glimpse of French middle-class, fin-de-siècle society, the targeted consumers of this plaquette were women who passed their recreational hours in the accomplished and industrious activity of needlework. The maidens in the design attending to their sewing were meant to evoke reality: the plaquette adorned the lid of a sewing box. Using cutting-edge modern reproductive technology, this plaquette was created as one of multiples, available on order from a printed sales’ catalogue. It was also available in miniature format as a thimble, with matching scissors and needle cases, all in Vernon’s elegant and fashionable Art Nouveau style.
