Toast rack

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 709

This object was used to toast bread in the open hearth. The sturdy tripod legs raised the bread above the ashes, while the decorative arches on the platform supported pieces of bread of different sizes. The platform could be rotated to toast both sides evenly.
