Tongs

1845
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This set of tongs belongs to a tea and coffee set containing nine pieces. The service was made for James Hamilton Wilson of Baltimore in 1845, the year he married. The coat of arms is that of the Hamilton family. These tongs are ornamented with similar motifs to those found on the holloware pieces of the service; however, the technique used is flat chasing instead of repoussé.

(See 1987.31.1–.9 for service.)
