The leading comic actor John Liston appears here as the inept schoolmaster Dominie Sampson in the play "Guy Mannering or The Gypsy's Prophesy." Daniel Terry adapted the latter from Sir Walter Scott's famous novel of 1815 into a musical that opened at the Covent Garden Theatre on March 12, 1816. Liston played the role again when the play was revived at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on September 13, 1820.
