Huqqa Base with Silver Beads

Not on view

Waterpipes (huqqas) formed part of the elegant trappings of the opulent courts of south Asia. Beautifully fashioned examples such as this item were used by the rulers themselves, and sometimes their wives. This huqqa base is made of transparent glass, with a bell-shaped body, a slim neck, a drip-guard, and a slightly flaring rim. Apart from the lower neck, which is free of decoration, the entire surface has a textile-like decorative scheme containing silver appliqué that shimmers around surviving fragments of colored glass inlays in red and green.
