Mosque in a Slum

ca. 1978; printed 2024
Not on view
The black and white photograph is the work of the award winning photographer Pablo Bartholomew (b.1955). It depicts a mosque in a slum area of Calcutta, India. The artist often turns his camera to sites and subjects that represent marginalized and underclass elements of society, finding unexpected beauty, humanity and dignity. In this instance we have a birds-eye view of the rather delicate and symmetrical features of a small white mosque rising from the middle of a shanty town of angled tiled roofs, which retains a sense of charm in comparison to the modern blocks beyond.
