On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 690

This print is from a portfolio of ten linocuts that Méndez created for Río Escondido, a film by Emilio Fernández that was released in 1948. The prints were shown as backdrops for the film’s title and credits. The story follows a schoolteacher who arrives in the remote Río Escondido to find a ruthless landowner controlling the town. The landowner is shown here sitting with his feet on a table, issuing orders to workers who carry heavy sacks into the distance.
