Solitude (Soledad), plate 5 from "Hidden River" (Río Escondido)
Leopoldo Méndez Mexican
Publisher Editorial 'La Estampa Mexicana' Mexican
This print is from a portfolio of ten linocuts that Méndez created for Río Escondido, a film by Emilio Fernández that was released in 1948. The prints were shown as backdrops for the film’s title and credits. The story follows a schoolteacher who arrives in the remote Río Escondido to find a ruthless landowner controlling the town. The teacher’s dignity and strength in the face of oppression and her poor health are the focus of the narrative. Resembling a cadaver, the teacher is shown here in a darkened space being watched over by a small child.
