Sir Henry Thompson, a successful London surgeon, amateur artist, and astronomer, began collecting “Nankin” porcelain, Chinese ceramics made for export during the Qing Dynasty (1661–1722), in about 1870. He amassed one of the finest collections in England. He published this book as a limited edition of 220 copies illustrated by himself and James McNeill Whistler, who was also a collector of Nankin porcelain.
