Fan leaf for the Arts and Industry Exposition
This fan leaf, published by the French lithography firm Lemercier, commemorates the 1862 International Exhibition in London. It shows hordes of people on foot and on horseback (even on an elephant), carrying flags, large crates, and canvases toward the English capital, represented by the dome of Saint Paul’s Cathedral on the horizon, crowning the lower arch of the fan. Above, allegories of Industry and Art frame a banner bearing the date. At the 1862 fair, the French fan maker Duvelleroy was heralded by The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue as "manufacturers for the world, of those ‘necessary luxuries,’ fans, which they produce in immense variety . . . frequently decorated by renowned artists."
