Hanukkah Lamp

Johannes van der Lely Dutch

Not on view

This Hanukkah lamp consists of an elaborate backplate with highly embossed flowers and leaf motifs. Silver lamps from the Netherlands are very rare, few having survived the Second World War. The choice of material and elaborate ornamentation suggests that the lamp was made for a wealthy and established Jewish patron, most likely that of Spanish and Portuguese origin.
