Vase

1889–1906
Not on view
Richly painted porcelain answered growing demand for artistic display objects in the late-nineteenth century. Ceramic Art Company was founded in 1889, concentrated solely on producing this type of artistic porcelain. This vase, with decoration adapted from William-Adoplphe Bouguereau’s 1882 painting Le Crépuscule (Museum of Fine Arts Havana), speaks to cosmopolitan approach to design sources and the skill of the decorator, V. R. Goode, about whom little is known. China painting was an important profession for immigrants and considered respectable for women, both as a vocation and a hobby.
