Persian Dragon-Handled Ewer
This ewer (aftaba) is an example of late-nineteenth-century Iranian metalwork, produced primarily for export to Europe and the United States. An almost identical ewer in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (MAK) was exhibited in the Persian Pavilion at the 1873 Vienna World Exposition and was purchased after the fair closed. Austrian designers regarded such objects as important sources of inspiration for the design of their local wares.
