Landscape

ca. 1883–84
Not on view
This landscape drawing by Francesca Alexander is a dramatic example of her precise drafting style. The intimate scene depicts a forest interior with rugged boulders in the foreground, a small cascade trickling from a low rocky edge, and a densely forested background. Encouraged by English writer John Ruskin’s advocacy of “truth to nature,” Alexander meticulously renders leaves and flora, contours of boulders, and the texture of moss and lichen on bark and rock. Born in Boston, Alexander spent most of her life and career in Italy and is best known for her depictions of Italian figural and religious subjects, especially in illustrated publications such as Tuscan Songs (1884).
