Drawing of a Horse with Stamped Inscriptions

ca. 1960s
Not on view
This drawing by Sadegh Tabrizi, a member of the Saqqakhana movement, depicts a horse adorned with elaborate tribal trappings and ornaments. The horse dominates the composition, while a hybrid interpretation of the Lion and Sun appears below it. The lion is rendered with the face of a moustached man and the body of an animal, with a sword placed across its body. Beneath the torso appears an image of the maiden sun. The artist has manipulated the conventional Iranian symbol of the Lion and Sun, possibly offering a personal commentary on its meaning and significance.
