Copied in the late 16th century, this devotional object illustrates how under the Ottomans, illustrations relating to the Prophet and the Holy Cities were increasingly visualized through calligraphy and image. It presents stylistic elements relating to Mamluk illuminated book making traditions, which are combined with Ottoman floral patterns and a distinct Ottoman naskh script. The object articulates how following the Ottoman conquest of North Africa, eclectic styles developed in 16th century Ottoman Egypt.
