This publication, illustrated with 16 color and 168 black-and-white plates, accompanies an exhibition held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from April 10 to June 16, 1991. Nine museums and six private collections have lent to this presentation, which, given the riches of North American holdings, provides a remarkably complete survey of Delacroix's achievement as a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker.

The English scholar Lee Johnson, author of an exemplary catalogue raisonné of Delacroix's paintings, has contributed the two important essays on the artist's life and work.
