First Mariners Methodist Episcopal Church in Cherry Street, New York

This print depicts a street view of a one-story, classical temple-like church (founded in 1844) at right; O. Sherwood's lumber yard (identified by the sign above its entry gate) is left of the church. The church is a small building with a pitched roof and column pilasters on its facade flanking the large wooden entry door (accessed by a flight of steps). Two large windows are on the facade, and five large windows are depicted on the side. A large blue flag (with the words "Mariners Methodist Church") flies from the roof above the church entry.

On the sidewalk, at the center of the image, there is a tall flagpole flying the United States flag, with two boys and two sailors standing nearby. At the right of the image, a man riding a white horse approaches, while two women converse on the sidewalk beside the church. On the sidewalk to the left of the flag pole, two men in top hats converse, with a pet dog beside them. At the far left, there is a water pump on the sidewalk, near a cart wheel on the road. In the left background, a large building flies a U.S. flag. A few residential houses are in the right background. In the bottom margin beneath the image, yet above the imprinted title, there is a vignette of sailing ships flanked by two lists of Trustee names on "plaques."
