An artist first associated with the Fauves, Marquet often returned to subjects, exploring subtle differences in light and color in his compositions. The open window, long a favorite of artists, was one such motif. Marquet’s open-window paintings frame brilliant landscapes that contrast with darkened interior spaces and introduce personal elements from the studio. Here, the vertical format intensifies the view from opened balcony doors onto the landscape of Algiers. Since 1927, Marquet regularly returned to Algiers to paint, the pull to the sea so strong that even after his apartment was requisitioned by the Allies in 1942, he continued to paint the port of Algiers from a window of the Hotel Terminus.
